Taiwan Stocks Close Higher - Nov 8, 2004

TAIPEI, Nov 8 Asia Pulse - Share prices on the Taiwan Stock Exchange closed higher Monday, with the weighted index, the market's key barometer, moving up 6.15 points to 5,937.46.

The bourse opened at 5,937.16 and fluctuated between 5,942.86 and 5,894.98 during the trading. A total of 2.93 billion shares changed hands on a market turnover of NT$63.57 billion (US$1.93 billion).

Four of the eight major stock categories gained ground, with textile stocks moving up the most at 1.3 per cent, followed by foodstuff issues at 1.2 per cent, plastics and chemicals shares at 0.8 per cent and banking and financial shares at 0.3 per cent.

Three other major stock categories lost ground, with machinery and electronics shares moving down the most at 0.4 per cent, followed by paper and pulp issues at 0.2 per cent and cement stocks at 0.1 per cent.

Construction issues remained unchanged.

Losers outnumbered gainers 364 to 295, with 126 stocks remaining unchanged.
